| Position Summary | Northern Arizona University seeks an experienced, dynamic development officer to pursue private, foundation, and corporate support for the University's College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences. The Director of Development plans and directs comprehensive strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gift prospects. Working closely with the Dean, this position is responsible for overall leadership and management of the development efforts of the College. Major gift (defined at NAU as $25,000) development is the primary focus of the position. Allied responsibilities include: participation in strategic planning; Planned Giving liaison; NAU Fund giving and gift club liaison; working with volunteer and advisory boards; communications and public relations planning; and Corporate/Foundation liaison. Significant personal interaction with friends of the University and College, prospects and donors is required. NAU is in the pre-planning stage of a comprehensive capital campaign. | | | |
| Specific Responsibilities | • Work with the College of Engineering, Forestry & Natural Sciences Dean, faculty and staff, as well as University Advancement and Foundation staff, and the University administration, to establish strategic fundraising plans and priorities. • Cultivate and secure major gifts in support of the college with specific interest in leading donors to support priority projects and initiatives. • Participate fully in the university’s comprehensive fundraising program including the prospect management system. • Help set and then meet established fundraising goals and prospect contact objectives, and then be directly accountable for those goals. • Oversee a comprehensive college-wide stewardship program to consistently acknowledge and thank donors leading to continued donor participation. • Working with the Director of Gift Planning, develop a marketing plan to educate current and prospective donors and allied professionals about the benefits of gift and estate planning. • Manage a continual personal portfolio of approximately 150 prospects. • Cultivate prospects and donors for the purpose of negotiating and closing gifts through carefully planned personal contacts and visits. • Develop strategies and briefing materials for major solicitations, and arrange visits for the Dean and faculty, and accompany them as appropriate. • Work with the Director of Gift Planning in the identification of deferred giving prospects. • Prepare an annual operating budget that includes marketing, cultivating, and visiting prospects to enhance the receipt of major gifts. • Provide regular and timely gift reports for the Dean and the Associate Vice President for University Advancement to facilitate management decision-making. | | | |
| Qualifications | Qualities and experiences that ideal candidates should display include: • Baccalaureate degree from a four-year college or university. • Three or more years of fundraising experience including the cultivation and solicitation of prospects that have led to the closing of significant gifts. • A history of positive relationships with members of the academic community, major gift prospects, and volunteers. • Commitment to higher education and a strong desire to support and advocate the mission of Northern Arizona University. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Capacity to inspire confidence, trust and cooperation. • Proven contributing team player with a history of working in a collaborative environment. • Strong marketing skills. • Demonstrated success as a public speaker. • Demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. • Ability and willingness to engage in frequent travel to identify, assess, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects, as well as make connections with allied professionals. • Strong organizational, motivational, and time management skills. • Demonstrated ability to interact with donors. • Ability to develop effective partnerships with internal and external constituencies. • Demonstrated team player with the ability to gain trust and confidence with colleagues and constituents. | | | |
| Preferred | Preference will be given to candidates who also display one or more of the following: • Prior experience in a comprehensive development program at a higher education institution. • Advanced academic degree. • Experience working within the dynamics of a capital campaign.
